Better Than: A Bouncy Script Font for Playful Projects

There I was, staring at a blank brand board, trying to find the right visual voice for a new kids’ craft supply line. The client wanted something that felt approachable, fun, and a little bit mischievous. I’d cycled through several options—modern sans serifs, clean slab fonts, even a few other script styles—but nothing quite hit the right tone. Then I stumbled on Better Than.

This hand-crafted script font is full of bounce and whimsy. It’s not the kind of font you’d use for a high-end luxury brand or a corporate annual report. But for a project that needed to feel light, playful, and unapologetically creative, it was perfect. The fluidity of the letters, the soft curves, and the subtle swashes gave it a sense of movement that made it feel alive on the page.

Visual Characteristics and Personality

Better Than has a very distinct personality. It’s not overly ornate, but it carries a sense of warmth and charm that makes it stand out. The lowercase letters have a slight slant, and the uppercase forms are more structured, which helps maintain legibility while still keeping things lively. The font’s weight is consistent, so it doesn’t feel too heavy or too light in any given context.

What really sets Better Than apart is its handmade quality. There’s a certain imperfection in the strokes that gives it an organic feel, as if it were written by hand rather than designed digitally. This adds to its appeal for projects that want to feel authentic and personal.

Testing Better Than in Real Branding Work

I tested Better Than across a range of design assets. On a logo concept, it added a friendly, approachable energy that worked well with a simple icon. When paired with a serif font like Playfair Display, it created a nice contrast that felt both modern and nostalgic. For a packaging mockup, it brought a sense of fun that complemented the colorful illustrations and playful product descriptions.

On a business card, the font held up surprisingly well. Even at smaller sizes, it remained readable without losing its character. In web design, it worked best as a headline or hero text, where its expressive nature could shine. As a social media graphic, it added a casual, engaging vibe that felt right for a brand targeting younger audiences.

Strengths and Limitations

Better Than excels in display and headline applications. It’s not ideal for long blocks of body text, especially in small sizes. Its flowing style can make it harder to read when used in dense paragraphs. That said, it works great as an accent or supporting typeface when paired with a more neutral font.

For a skincare brand looking to convey a natural, holistic feel, Better Than might be a good fit for headers or taglines. But for a financial services company or a legal firm, it would likely feel out of place. It’s best suited for brands that want to communicate a laid-back, informal, or child-friendly tone.

Practical Guidance for Designers

If you’re considering using Better Than in your work, test it in different contexts before finalizing. Print it out, view it on screens of various sizes, and see how it interacts with other design elements. Make sure it aligns with the overall brand identity and doesn’t clash with other typography.

When pairing Better Than with other fonts, look for complementary styles. A classic serif like Georgia or a clean sans serif like Montserrat can balance its whimsical nature. Avoid pairing it with other script fonts, as that can create visual chaos. Instead, use it as a highlight or focal point within a broader typographic system.

Font Features and Availability

Better Than comes in multiple weights and includes alternates, ligatures, and swashes that add variety to your design options. It supports a range of languages, making it versatile for international projects. The font is available in common file formats, including OTF and TTF, and it’s also webfont-ready, which is essential for digital projects.

Before using Better Than in client work, always check the commercial licensing terms. Make sure the license covers the intended use, whether it’s for print, digital, or merchandise. This is especially important if you’re working on branding materials that will be used by others or sold as part of a product.
